Rowsmith

Your pattern, figured for your yarn.

Patterns say “increase 9 stitches evenly” and leave the arithmetic to you. Rowsmith works it out, writes the row the way a pattern would, and draws where every change goes. Then it converts your gauge, counts your yarn and keeps your place.

The tools

Four tools on one worktable.

Each one shows its working, so you can check it against your pattern before you knit a stitch.

  1. Even Spacer

Increase or decrease evenly across a row or a round, knitting or crochet, with M1, kfb, k2tog, or two-in-one and two-together in US or UK crochet terms.

    Row: K6, [M1, K5] 4 times.

  2. Gauge Converter

Your swatch came out at 18 stitches where the pattern wants 20? Every stitch and row count from the pattern, worked out at your gauge, kept to the stitch repeat.

    Cast on 120 at 20 sts / 4 in → 108 at 18 sts / 4 in (106 or 110 to keep a 4 + 2 repeat)

    Open the Gauge Converter
  3. Yarn Amount

Swap in a different yarn and know how many skeins to buy, or weigh what is left on the ball and know whether it will finish the piece.

    5 skeins × 220 yd, in a 180 yd yarn with 10% extra → buy 7 skeins

  4. Needle and hook sizes

Millimeters to US sizes for needles and hooks, and the yarn weight categories 0 to 7 in the Craft Yarn Council’s table (read October 18, 2026).

    4.5 mm needle = US 7 · 5 mm hook = H-8 · 18 sts / 4 in = category 4, Medium

How the spacing works

Division, with the remainder put somewhere sensible.

Worked flat, 4 increases split a row into 5 runs: one before the first increase and one after the last. 26 stitches over 5 runs is 5 each with 1 left over, so 1 run gets one stitch more.

26stitches on the needle
÷ 5runs between and around 4 increases
5 r 11 run of 6, 4 runs of 5
= 30stitches when the row is done
